The enduring legacy of Chateau Fortia, hailed by Robert Parker as "one of the most historically significant estates of the appellation," is intricately woven into the fabric of the region's history. Originating as a humble farm in the 17th century, it was not until two centuries later that Paul Antoine de Fortia transformed it into a proper vineyard with new buildings.

In 1929, under the stewardship of chateau owner Baron Pierre Leroy, Châteauneuf-du-Pape became the pioneering region in France to implement stringent winemaking regulations. This initiative laid the groundwork for the comprehensive regulatory framework that would eventually govern all French wine regions in 1936. As a result, Chateau Fortia stands today as "one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most legendary domains," as acclaimed by Vinous and other critics, serving as a proud standard bearer against which each vintage is measured.

The genesis of Fortia's Cuvée du Baron dates back to 2001, paying homage to Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié. Crafted with a prominent blend featuring Grenache and Syrah, the Cuvée du Baron epitomizes the essence of our terroir through its complexity, opulence, and nuanced notes of delicate spice and ripe fruits.

"Similarly colored to the traditional cuvée, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Baron has rocking aromas and flavors of garrigue, kirsch liqueur, dried flowers, and spice. Deep, medium to full-bodied, elegant and weightless on the palate, it's the finest example of this cuvée since the 2003. The blend is 55% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre. Despite the high Syrah component, it just screams Grenache."

-Jeb Dunnuck, 94 Points

"Beautiful dense color, ruby red with purple reflections. Olfactory attack on sweet spices, zan. Then fresh cherry. The palate is very greedy in attack. It displays a good level of fat which envelops a very tight but very fine-grained tannic structure. The jammy black fruit develops in the mouth, then the fresh mineral notes of peat and delicately minty to finish."
